Rules

If you obtained your J.D. from an ABA-approved law school, then Rule 2 sets out the requirement you must meet in order to be licensed in Texas.

If you obtained your J.D. from a non-ABA-approved law school, then Rule 13(2) applies.

Pursuant to Rule 13(2), an Applicant who is authorized to practice law in another state is exempt from the requirement of holding a J.D. from an ABA-approved law school if the Applicant:

  1. has been actively and substantially engaged in the lawful practice of law as the Applicant’s principal business or occupation for at least 3 of the last 5 years immediately preceding the filing of the Application;
  2. has a J.D. degree, or an equivalent, that satisfies Rule 13(2)(b).

It is your responsibility to carefully read the Rules Governing Admission to the Bar of Texas, in particular Rules 2 and 13, to determine whether you qualify. We cannot give any advisory opinions, nor can any determination of eligibility occur before an application is filed.

Because Rule 13 admission is an exception to the general eligibility requirements of Rule 2, it is strictly construed. Evaluate your education and your practice experience to determine whether you qualify under Rule 13. Do not apply if you do not meet the requirements of Rule 13. Per Rule 18(b), fees are not refunded or transferred.
